『The Missionary』 (1897년 10월)

서울에서 4년 반을 기다린 우리는 드디어 전주에 살게 되었습니다. 비록 영원히 살 집은 아니지만, 우리는 이제 정착했다고 말할 수 있습니다. 평생을 같은 곳에서 살아온 사람은 마침내 정착하는 것이 얼마나 위로와 기쁨과 안도인지 이해할 수 없습니다. 우리는 새 집이 완공된 후인 내년 가을까지 이곳으로 이사할 수 없을까 봐 매우 걱정했지만, 다행히도 여름을 보낼 수 있는 작은 한국식 집을 살 수 있었습니다. 이 작은 집은 널찍한 미국 집들을 생각하면 정말 작지만, 꽤 편리합니다. 제가 한국에 온 이후로 이 집에서 사는 지금처럼 만족을 느낀 적이 없었던 것 같습니다. 그리고 우리가 이 사람들 사이에서 이 일을 할 수 있게 해주신 하나님께 감사하게 생각합니다.

After waiting in Seoul four and a half years, we are at last living in Chun Ju, and can say that we are really settled, although we are not living in our permanent dwelling house. Those of you who have lived in the same place all your lives cannot understand what a comfort and pleasure and relief it is to be settled at last. We were very much afraid we could not move down here till next fall, after the completion of our new house, but we fortunately were able to buy a tiny Korean house, well located, in which to spend the summer. This little house is very small indeed when we think of our roomy American houses, but it is really quite convenient. I have not felt so well satisfied since I have been in Korea as I do now in this little Korean house; and we feel so grateful to our Heavenly Father for enabling us to be here and do his work among this people.

우리의 선교지는 전주 시내가 내려다보이는 높은 언덕에 위치해 있습니다. 여기서 보이는 경치는 아름답습니다. 근처의 아름다운 언덕과 산들, 그리고 아름다운 계곡들이 마을 곳곳에 있고, 멀리에는 높은 산도 있습니다. 우리의 새 집은 특히 좋은 위치에 있어서 일 년 내내 아무런 변화 없이 살 수 있기를 기대할 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 이 집은 도시와 계곡의 더위, 연기, 그리고 말라리아로부터 벗어날 수 있을 만큼 높기 때문입니다.

Our mission property is beautifully situated upon high hills outside of and overlooking the city of Chun Ju. The view from here is beautiful — lovely hills and mountains near us, and beautiful valleys, dotted all over with villages, and high mountains in the distance. Our new house is especially well located; we hope to be able to live there all the year, without any change, as it is high enough up to be out of the heat and smoke and malaria of the city and valley below.

테이트 씨와 테이트 양은 우리가 여기에 도착하기 전부터 모든 순간 애써주었으며, 우리가 살 수 있는 작은 집을 마련할 수 있을 때까지 우리를 그들의 작은 숙소로 데려가서 그들이 할 수 있는 모든 것을 다 해주었습니다. 그들이 우리에게 베풀어 준 열렬한 환영이 우리에게 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 우리가 도착한 날 밤 다 같이 무릎을 꿇고 기도 드렸을 때, 이 먼 도시에서 함께 만나 주님의 예배에 한 번 더 자신을 바칠 수 있게 된 것에 대해 더 크고 벅찬 감사함을 느꼈습니다.

Mr. and Miss Tate had kindly done everything they could for our comfort before we came and when we reached here took us into their own tiny quarters until we could get our own little house ready for occupancy. The hearty welcome that they gave us did us good. When we all knelt down to prayers the night we arrived, I think we felt more thankful than we could possibly express that we were enabled to meet together in this far-off city and give ourselves once more to the Lord’s service.

이곳에서의 일은 많은 단점을 가지고 있고 매우 느리게 성장하고 있습니다. 하지만, 우리는 이 일과 우리에게 밝은 날이 올 것이라고 믿습니다. 테이트 양은 자신과 집을 구경하러 온 여자들에게 보여줄 수 있는 많은 것들을 가지고 있습니다. 물론 그들 중 거의 모두가 호기심 때문에 오는 것이지만, 한편으로는 그녀가 그들에게 복음에 대해 무언가 말할 좋은 기회를 줍니다. 테이트 양은 이웃들 중에 좋은 친구들이 많이 있는데, 그들의 방문은 사회적으로 정말 즐거운 일입니다. 저는 정문이 설치되는 대로 아이들과 함께 이곳에서 일을 시작하기를 바랍니다. 여자들은 모두 우리 아들을 보고 호기심이 많아져서 아이들을 들여보내면 테이트 양의 모임 분위기가 깨질까 봐 걱정이 될 정도입니다. 테이트 양에게는 매우 훌륭하고 성실한 조력자가 있습니다. 그녀는 결코 자신을 생각하지 않는 것처럼 보이지만, 항상 다른 사람들을 도우려고 하고, 찾아오는 여성들에게 복음을 설명하기를 갈망합니다. 그녀가 그렇게 명랑하고 행복하고 소박한 신뢰로 가득 차 있는 것을 보면 저는 기분이 좋아집니다.

The work here has had many drawbacks and grows very, very slowly, but we trust that there are bright days ahead for the work and for us. Miss Tate has all she can do seeing the women who came to see her and her home. Nearly all of them, of course, come out of curiosity, but it gives her the opportunity of saying something to them about the gospel. Miss Tate has a number of good friends among her neighbors, whose visits are a real pleasure socially. I hope to begin work here with the children as soon as we can get a front gate put up. The women are all so curious to see our little boy that, if I let the children in, I am afraid Miss Tate’s women’s meeting would be broken up for a while. Miss Tate has such a good, consecrated helper; she seems never to think of herself, but is always anxious to help others, and to explain the gospel to the women who come. It does me good to see her so cheerful and happy and so full of simple trust.

사람들이 새로운 곳에 갔을 때 모든 것이 마음에 드는 경우는 매우 드문 일이지만, 저는 새로운 터전의 모든 것이 만족스럽다고 말할 수 있게 되어 기쁩니다. 우리는 10월이나 11월에 새 집에 들어갈 수 있게 되기를 바라고, 테이트 씨와 테이트 양도 곧 자리를 잡기를 희망하고 있습니다. 두 집은 같은 언덕의 두 갈래 돌출된 곳에 있으며, 그 사이에는 작은 계곡이 있습니다. 언젠가 우리 한국 선교사가 지은 첫 번째 집들의 사진을 보내드릴 수 있기를 희망합니다. 우리의 일이 꾸준히 성장하고 있고, 하나님께서 우리에게 ‘축복의 소나기’를 내려주신다는 것을 곧 말씀드릴 수 있기를 바랍니다. 우리는 당신의 기도와 동정이 필요합니다. 친애하는 친구들, 이곳 전주에서 저희를 위해 기도하는 것을 잊지 마세요.

It is rarely the case that on going to a new place people find everything to suit the, but I am glad to be able to say, that I am pleased with everything at our new place. We hope to get into our new house in October or November. Mr. and Miss Tate hope to occupy their soon after. The two houses are situated on two spurs of the same hill, with a little ravine between. I hope someday to send you pictures of these, the first houses built by our Korean Mission. I hope, to be able soon to tell you that our work is growing steadily, and that God is giving us “showers of blessing.” We need your prayers and sympathy, dear friends. Don’t’ forget to pray for us here in Chun Ju.
