The Pioneers

We tell of the Band that first crossed the wide waters,

   To bring the glad tidings to the land of Chosen,

The message of love to those lost sons and daughters,

   Who knew not redemption’s sweet story till then.

The Band was of seven–the perfect in number–

   And bright were their hopes as they came to this shore.

They prayed and they planned and no ground did they cumber,

   But sowed by all waters the good seed from their store.

Miss Davis, the first one to reach Chemulpo,

   Was first, too, in every good labor of love;

The first one on errands of mercy to go,

   And first to be called to His service above.

Mr. Junkin, the saintly, abundant in labors,

   And happy in speech, with a heart full of love,

Led many blind souls to light and the Savior,

   Before he was taken for service above.

Mrs. Junkin was with him, so dear and devoted,

   So helpful to all and a mother so true;

Thought now in the homeland, we know she still loves us,

   And prays for our work unceasingly, too.

Then too, Dr. Reynolds, the learned translator,

   Has labored to publish the life-giving Word,

By lip and by page, with noble devotion,

   Has he given the message which thousands have heard.

Mrs. Reynolds, so ready with love and devotion,

   To help in the work which they came out to do,

Has well done her part, and with little commotion,

   Has made herself Useful, and well beloved, too.

Mr. Tate is well known to our friends of today,

   And his locks have grown grey, but not aged his heart.

He’s up early and off o’er the hills far way,

   Ever faithful and ready to do his full part.

Miss Tate, though named last, is not least in endeavor,

   But all through the years has done her full share,

With visits and classes and journeys wherever

   There were would she could win for the Mansions up there.

Still with us are four, and two are in heaven,

   And one in the home-land our pathway still cheers,

We love and we honor this first Band of seven,

   And pray God’s rich blessing attend our pioneers.

넓디넓은 물 넘어 처녀지에 건너온 이들,

넘실대는 기쁨의 소식 전하러 조선을 택한 이들.

사랑의 소식, 잃어버린 자녀들에게,

속전의 기쁜 소식, 알지도 못했던 그들에게.

일행은 칠인- 그 완전 수–

부푼 소망 한 가득 이 땅에 내리었다.

무릎으로 기도하고 머리 맞대 뜻을 찾아,

어느 곳도 거침없이 곡간에서 좋은 씨앗 물가마다 심었다네.

데이비스 양, 제물포항 제일 먼저 발을 딛고,

귀한 사랑 모든 수고 그녀가 항상 처음,

긍휼의 첫 심부름도 그 분이 먼저,

위에서 부르심도 제일 먼저 받으셨어라.

전킨씨, 오랜 수고와 노동의 성자,

유쾌한 언변, 넘치는 사랑의 사람.

영혼의 눈 먼 무리, 빛과 구원으로 인도하신 분,

위에서 주시는 일 내리는 날까지. 

전킨부인, 헌신과 사랑으로 남을 섬기며,

모든 이에 도움 주는, 진정한 모성애의 원천,

비록 지금 본국으로 헤어져 있으나,

우리들 마음을 품고 늘 기도함 알고 있네.

그리고 레이놀즈 박사, 학식있는 번역자,

생명을 주는 말씀 출판에 생명을 바쳐온 사람.

입술을 글월로, 고귀한 헌신으로

수천의 사람들에게 생명의 소식 전하여 준 분

레이놀즈 부인, 언제나 희생과 사랑을 드릴 준비가 된 사람,

부름 받은 사명 함께 감당하며,

묵묵히 자리 자리를 지켜주신 분

고임 받고 쓰임 받는 그릇되셨네.

테이트씨, 오늘까지 우리들의 친구가 되어준 사람.

머리카락 희끗해졌건만, 조금도 빈틈없는 마음의 가짐.

오늘도 이른 새벽 깨우며 저 언덕 너머로 터벅터벅 향하시는 발걸음

준비된 정성으로 하루를 늘 상 온전히 태우시는 분.

테이트 양,   그 이름 마지막 놓아둔 뜻은,

덤으로 많은 수고하였기 때문.

힘에 부치는 수고, 년 년마다 채워간 세월의 잔흔,

발길 이끄는 대로 두루 다녀 배움을 베풀었으니,

하늘 집거할 한 명의 식구 찾기 위함이라.

아직 이 땅에 머루르는 4인, 하늘의 영접자 2인

그리고 본국에 거주하는 1인, 모두 추임새로 함께 길 벗되었네.

7인 일행의 시초, 애뜻함과 뿌듯함 하나로 전하니

하나님의 넘치는 축복, 그대들 개척자들과 함께 하여라.
